GRACE IN UNEXPECTED PLACES…7/16/08
by SteveI can’t tell you how much I anticipate the arrival of the bi-weekly Christian Century. I almost always read it from cover-to-cover, not just for the excellent articles, but for the encouragement and hope I receive from reading about progressive Christianity. The magazine’s logo, Thinking Critically, Living Faithfully, is an excellent summary of we are called by God to do. The “thinking” part, I particularly like, because in my experience, thinking about our faith is something too many Christians seem loathe to do.
This month’s issue contains a short vignette about Gene Robinson, gay bishop of New Hampshire. As reported by GQ magazine (an unlikely source!), fellow priest, Ron Prinn, kept his distance after Robinson revealed his sexual orientation. Prinn refused to share communion with Robinson, and ignored invitations for meals at Robinson’s home.
Later, Prinn developed Parkinson’s disease, and on paying a visit to Robinson’s home, found that the bishop and his partner had installed a lift in order to make their home more easily accessible to people like him. Prinn’s wife said that in her husband’s final months, Robinson would sit with him for hours, holding his hand, and before leaving, would kiss Prinn on the top of his head.
Sounds a lot like Jesus to me…and if that’s not what it’s all about, I’m in the wrong profession.
Hi there…been out of the loop for a while.
It amazes me how time and time again, people are so shocked when those whom they have judged as un-Christ-like, do exactly as Jesus taught by word AND example…go figure.
Robinson displayed the hospitality, care and love that is seldom found this side of Heaven!
Looking forward to more blogs.
Hey! Nice to have you back! I know you have your hands full in the new district. So does Jenny! Believe me!
