FAITH AND POLITICS…8/28/08
by SteveLou Dobbs recently went into a rant about Pope Benedict’s comments on immigration, saying, “We don’t need popes or preachers telling us what to think and how to vote….Religion is about saving souls, isn’t it?”
Responding to Dobbs, John M. Buchanan, editor of The Christian Century, wrote:
Christians have long struggled over defining the proper relationship between their faith commitments and the political order. The struggle is ongoing, because Christians believe in the incarnation and believe that God loves this world and cares about how life is lived. Therefore issues of war, health care, immigration, torture and energy and the environment are not just political issues; they are moral and theological issues as well.
If I am any judge of the gospel stories about Jesus, he was nothing if not political. It’s just that his kingdom always stands in opposition to the kingdoms of this world. Which kingdom claims our first allegiance is up to us.
