AN ARGUMENT STARTER…1.29.09

by Steve

I wouldn’t know about this  book if it were not for Reader’s Digest, which, for some unexplained reason, shows up monthly in my mailbox (unexplained because I have never subscribed to it).  The blurb I read this morning came from a book with the tantalizing title:  Why We Suck:  A Feel Good Guide to Staying [...]

ON PRAYING FOR PEACE…1.28.09

by Steve

I began my day devotionally by reading from Thomas Merton.  Merton was a Trappist monk, author, and peace activist, who wrote prolifically about such subjects as prayer, the interior life, social responsibility, and war, to name but a few.  He is today regarded by many as a spiritual master, a man who exemplified the quest [...]

Almost thirty years ago I was in the midst of doing my doctoral work. A major part of my research and reflection grew out of the work of Jurgen [...]

MY SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS…1/13/09

by Steve

For several years now, I have greatly enjoyed teaching a Sunday School class every Sunday morning.  This is not your typical SS class.  It is a class where questions are encouraged and welcomed.  It is a class which examines different points of view and encourages people to make their own decisions.  It is a class [...]

YES, WE DID! 1/12/08

by Steve

Just wanted you all to know that UGUMC met its goal of raising $129,000 by January 15.  At the close of yesterday’s worship service, treasurer Rose Speece and finance chairman Bill Wooten announced that by 9 a.m. on Monday morning, the church’s $229,000 debt would be history.  And so it is.
I would place our reaching this goal [...]
