MORE ON BRIAN MCLAREN…2.4.09

Brian’s newest book is titled FINDING OUR WAY AGAIN, The Return of the Ancient Practices.   Early in the book, Brian tells of conducting an interview with Dr. Peter Senge in front of about 500 pastors.  Dr. Senge reported that he had just come from a major bookstore, where he had asked the proprietor about what kind of books were selling best.  The answer came as no surprise…books on how to get rich in today’s economy.

When Dr. Senge asked  what was next on the list of bestsellers, the proprietor said that books about spirituality came in second, and most of them were about Buddhism, which raised the question, “Why are books about Buddhism more popular than books on Christianity?”

The answer:  Buddhism presents itself as a way of life, while most of the time Christianity is presented as a system of belief.  How have we ever gotten so far away from Jesus’ original teachings that many have concluded that what should be  important to us now is believing rather than becoming

Here at Union Grove, people find that becoming is our emphasis.  For us, Christianity is, first and foremost, about following the way of Jesus…a way of self-sacrifice which leads to the death of self which leads to transformation and new life in Him.  Not everyone wants to make such a radical commitment, but enough have to make all our efforts seem worthwhile.

If that’s the kind of church you’re looking for, come join us!
