ONE OF THE JOYS…3.23.09
by SteveLast Friday night, 10 friends and I went to see a production of “A FEW GOOD MEN” put on by a theater arts group from North Wilkesboro. One of our college students here at the church, Nick Simmerson, had the starring role (the Tom Cruse character in the movie). Every one of us left the theater that evening feeling that we had witnessed the beginnings of greatness in that young man. I have no doubt that one of these days we will all be saying “We knew Nick when….”
Nick’s performance was masterful…almost three hours of dialogue, and he never missed a cue, or a word, and never failed to convey the intricacies of his character. I told our congregation here on Sunday morning that I could not have been more proud of Nick had he been my own son.
When Nick and his family first began attending Union Grove, he couldn’t have been more than 6 years old, flaming red hair, and a personality to match. It has been my joy to watch him grow up, maturing into an outstanding actor, a committed Christian, and an all around wonderful human being. Being able to see this kind of thing is a rare privilege…reserved only for those pastors who are fortunate enough to enjoy long tenures in their churches.
When I see young men and women like Nick, I start to believe that the future of the Church is in good hands. I am so thankful to have been a small part of their growing up, and hope that the things they have learned in this church will always help them to remain committed followers of Jesus.
