BLOGGING TOWARD SUNDAY…

Mike Loftis told me last night that as he and Ann were driving through Charlotte recently, they passed a large Baptist church with a big sign out front which said, “YES, WE ARE A LIBERAL CHURCH!” Wow! Just imagine that…a church with the courage to announce its identity boldly, publicly, and proudly.

That church (I wish I knew its name) has obviously spent some time in soul searching, deciding who they are at heart, committing themselves to that track, then being bold about announcing it to their community so that like-minded people will be attracted. Conservative churches do this all the time, with their church signs often announcing that they are “Pre-millenial, Fundamental, and Bible-believing,” but this is the first time I’ve ever seen a liberal church with the fortitude to do the same.

Maybe it’s a good idea to let the community know up front who the church is. There are conservative Christians, and there are more moderate/liberal Christians, and both groups need churches which will minister to their needs. In our community, we offer an approach to Christianity that is unique here: believing, preaching and teaching that Christianity is all about following the way of Jesus. I think we should be bold about that, shouting it from the housetops!
