THE DEATH OF SUNDAY SCHOOL…10.14.09

by Steve

OK, maybe SS is not dead, but it is certainly dying, in most places a long, lingering death. Perhaps the most merciful thing to do would be to just put it out of its misery! Many churches have done just that, replacing the traditional Sunday morning hour with a midweek evening featuring Christian education for the entire family. When I just suggested that we start to think about that possibility here in U.G., you would have thought I wanted to abolish the flag, motherhood, and apple pie!

So…as is often the case in the church, we put our heads together and reached a compromise…it’s called “Wonderful Wednesdays,” and I have very high hopes for it. We will gather every Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm for a quick, light supper, then at 6:30 we’ll split up into 5 age-appropriate groups and spend an hour studying the scriptures together… but not just ANY scriptures. Each night we’ll be looking at the lectionary texts for the following Sunday, and so be better prepared for worship and SS. Children will have take-home papers which encourage family discussion of the lesson, as well as music and easy crafts. Kinda like Vacation Bible School.

Wonderful Wednesdays will not replace Sunday School, at least not in the foreseeable future. Instead, it will enhance our Christian education mission, and provide an opportunity for learning for some of our families who work on Sundays. We are blessed to have a fantastically talented and creative staff:

Kenny and Meme Edmisten….nursery and preschool
Jo Wilson and Jeanne Gaither….K-3
Amanda Bridges and Nannette Cockerham…4-6
Carabet Sisk and Susanna Francisco…7-8
Steve Kirby…High School and Adult

Please pray for the success of this new ministry, and support it with your presence and active participation. This is important stuff we’re doing here, and there is much at stake!

  1. I am only one voice in the young”er” generation, but Josh and I love the idea of a midweek scripture study. He works 3 Sundays a month and therefore misses not only Sunday School, but the worship service as well. Often times he has stated that he would love to be in Steve’s Sunday school class, so this gives us the opportunity to come to this class. As for nay-sayers, anytime there is change, not all feedback is positive. Let’s look at this glass as being full and realize we are adding an extra day in the week of fellowship and opportunity to share the greatness of Christ! Nothing is being taken away, it is being added! We are extremely appreciative for each of you that have stepped forward to dedicate your time to teach these classes and are very excited to take part in the learning!

  2. I am looking forward to Wonderful Wednesdays.

  3. Looking forward to it myself..and expecting ALL of you!
